So I’m driving along in the left lane on a city street near my place and another guy, without any signaling or checking, decides to do a U-Turn in front of me.
The result is this:
Thankfully nobody got hurt and it wasn’t hard enough of a hit to cause airbags to deploy.
However, it was bad enough that both cars needed to be towed. And I’m 99% sure my Suzuki will get written off since the estimated damage to my from the collision center is $3770... and it’s very likely that my car has a replacement value that is lower than that.
I have the insurance-covered rental car lined up for tomorrow and I’m back to looking for another car after only having had this car for 3 months.
*sigh*
Update: More pics so you can better see the damage:

Oh this is really sad! I hope it isn’t as much a pain in the ass as it could be!

any better pics of damage?
maybe you could repair it yourself for less.
maybe just replace front steering/suspension bits

You are safe, so the car did its job. If it’s totaled, the car can be replaced (even though that’s a pain), but it could have been much worse.

Oof, that’s a bummer. Right during the holidays, too! I hope you get in another good car soon.

Pour one out :(

Still better luck than Jake.

Basically the front passenger side bumper is badly damaged and the front passenger door can’t be opened anymore. Also, the fender rubs on the tire, so it’s not really driveable right now. Though when I had it towed home, it did move under its own power so I could park it so it was out of the way. Just can’t steer very much to the left.
And that means the car is still fine for a reverse-NASCAR race!!!

Here is a good shot of the damage:
The other car is a Buick Verano.

Noooooo. :( Such a neat little hatch. Sorry. Glad no one was hurt.

it’s toast

Nah... this is toast:
My car is likely just a write-off.

Yeah, that’s totalled. Even if the value is above the cost, there’s too many hard to find parts here.
Front fender, p/s front door, front bumper (SX4 specific,) wheel, tire, headlight, hood, core support may be damaged, all the suspension components (good luck finding the knuckles, sigh,) just too many difficult to find parts to realistically fix at any price. :(

Not to diminish the inconvenience for you , but I feel bad for those people on the light-rail, seems like they could have been waiting a long time.

They were waiting about 5-10 min as the operator called the police. The Police and the tow trucks showed up FAST and it got cleared up fast since there were no injuries.

Yup. At the collision reporting center, they estimated the damage to be around $3770. And my on-the-road price for this thing was $2100 three months ago ... though that was a really good deal. I’m guessing it will be valued around $2500 to $3000 based on past experience with getting cheap beater cars like this written off.
The wheel/tire, steering and suspension is still okay . Airbags didn’t go off either. But yeah, the hood, fender, bumper, light and passenger side door are damaged. The bumper isn’t an SX bumper though. This is a base model that only has the shape of where the SX-trim lights would be if I wasn’t a cheapskate base-model Aerio owner.
And I confirmed that the steering/suspension was still okay when I drove the car from the base of my driveway to where I park behind my house (narrow shared driveway that the wide-ass tow truck wouldn’t fit through easily) earlier this evening .
The main issue is the bashed- in fender causes it to rub on the tire even if I turn to the left just a little. Turning to the right or going straight is fine.
So it’s driv able enough to just move it on my driveway, but not okay to drive on public roads where I have to be able to turn right and left.
Should still be okay for a reverse-NASCAR race too!
LOL

On the upside... that's not a healthy bale of hay either.

I hope they found the other driver at fault....that’s ridiculous!
Glad you’re all OK, sucks for the l
it
tle Aerio though! You’ll probably be a bit sore for a day or two...

No aches or pain for me so far. It wasn’t a really high speed hit. I was doing 50kn/h at most at the time and did manage to slam on the brakes and scrub off speed before the impact.

Also, fault hasn’t been determined yet as those officers you see aren’t actual traffic officers. They were working on some other investigation and happened to be driving by.
Though the person at the collision reporting centre did say she didn’t see how I would be at fault.
I think it’s up to the claims adjuster to determine that.
In Toronto, the police only really get involved for serious collisions where there were injuries or worse.

Hopefully it all works out for you! Are you going to get the same value back from insurance that you spent purchasing the Aerio?

Basically I’ll get the replacement value for a car equivalent to a Suzuki Aerio with 149,000km.... which I'm sure will be at least as much as what I paid to buy this and get it on the road (cad$2100... I got a great deal)
It's a shame... it had at least another 100,000km of life left in it.

good you’re ok

$2.1k Cad? That does seem like a good deal.
I’ve been curious to know what I could get for my Civic (2001, ~285 ,000 km). I’m guessing “not much”.

From the back it looks like “eh, that’ll buff out”, but from the front it looks like a big cheque from the adjuster.
If you're looking for a total shitbox to fix/drive, I can hook you up with my wife's optra! (Don't do it, it's a huge pile of crap!) (But hey if you really want something cheap it is going up for sale) (but really, you probably shouldn't entertain this offer, it won't pass safety without some work)
![]() 12/24/2018 at 11:21 |

Tree fiddy! But chances are, it’s still probably worth $1500 as long as it still goes, turns and stops. And if it’s cert/etested, then it’s probably worth $2500
And yeah, based on my research, it was a great deal. Of course the Suzuki brand being dead, A/C not working (which I don’t care about), a minor 5th gear pop-out problem (which I fixed for less than CAD$100) and it being a beige base model of a fairly undesirable car (even though it’s basicly a good Japanese-built car) definitely are factors for the good price.
![]() 12/24/2018 at 11:29 |

Sure... I’ll take it for $500... as in you pay me $500 to take it... lol.
Nah... I won’t touch any of those Chevwoos/Daevrolets.
I have a niece who had one... it was crap. Now she has a Toyota Matrix.

Sounds like my Accent. It’s a 2009 that I bought in 2013 with only 54,000kms on it and I paid $6900 all-in (taxes,
everything, etc
)
It’s a base model with a stick, no A.C, no Cruise, no anything, so nobody wanted it and it had been sitting on the lot for like a year!

Looking forward to seeing a new car post :)

I love hearing about a good deal like that!
When I bought my Civic, I paid $9k for it with just under 80,000 km on it
. Other comparable ones were selling for closer to $12k, but this one had been rear-ended (but fixed). Since then, I’ve owned it for almost exactly 11 years, and it’s now at ~285,000 km. It’s been the only car I’ve owned, and I think I’m going to hang onto it until it dies, then replace it with either a plug-in hybrid or something totally electric.

I’m one of those people that is really going to miss driving stick when the time comes to replace my car. I think I should still be able to get one on my next car, but after that, I imagine they’ll not really exist anymore. Maybe an electric will be in the car
ds then!
